September 11, 2023 Press Release

TRANSFORMING SPACES ART TOUR RETURNS

The Transforming Spaces (TS) Committee is pleased to announce the return of their Art Bus Tour throughout New Providence for 2023. Dubbed “TS50” in honour of the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary, the event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, November 11th and 12th.

Due to the unforeseen presence of COVID-19 in 2020, TS reverted to a virtual format, which was well received under the circumstances, but patrons expressed their preference for the unique experience of the Bus Tour.  TS is happy to be able to satisfy these wishes as they plan another exciting weekend of immersion into Bahamian art and culture!

There will be six buses each day visiting a total of eight galleries located in both the eastern and western parts of the island: Contemporary Art Bahamas (CAB), Doongalik Studios, ECCHO at Baha Mar, Gallery & Art Center, Gallery & Wine Bar at Nassau Cruise Port (GWB), Hillside House, ICE Gallery, Sixty 2 Sixty, and TERN Gallery. A new feature will be a lunch stop at the Central Bank of The Bahamas, which will also be the official bus depot, midway through the tour to ‘refuel’ before boarding for another adventure!

Tickets will be available for sale at the beginning of October at $50, and will include access to any pre and post events as well as the closing party. Box offices will be located at Doongalik Studios, The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB), The Place for Art, The Current: Baha Mar Gallery & Art Center, and TERN Gallery.

More information on the various galleries and their exhibition themes will be forthcoming. The public can also visit the TS website at www.tsbahamas.com and follow the Facebook and Instagram social media pages @TSBahamas.

NOVEMBER 2020 PRESS RELEASE

TS2020 VIRTUAL ART TOUR IS A SUCCESS!

The Transforming Spaces Committee’s first ever Virtual Art Tour Premiere which took place November 14 & 15 was a huge success as ticketed patrons were able to experience the artwork of the seven art spaces: Central Bank of The Bahamas’ Balcony House, D’Aguilar Art Foundation, Doongalik Studios, Project I.C.E., National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, New Providence Art & Antiques, University of The Bahamas - via Zoom over the weekend from the comfort of their homes.

Originally scheduled for the end of March, the popular annual Art Tour had to be put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Realizing that physical visits to the gallery spaces via the regular bus transportation format would not be possible this year due to the ongoing health and safety protocols, the Committee converted the event into a virtual format via Zoom. Patrons logged online from New Providence, several Family Islands, and from U.S. cities over the launch weekend to watch the video presentations that were expertly prepared by the spaces.

“The comments from the patrons were extremely positive,” stated TS Treasurer, Antonius Roberts, who introduced his newly transformed creative space ‘Project I.C.E.’ located in the former Holiday Ice factory on Old Trail Road. “In spite of a few technical glitches, which were to be expected, the viewers remained engaged and enthusiastic throughout the two hour presentation, relishing the fact that they were still able to enjoy the art event in spite of not being physically present at the galleries because of the pandemic, so we are very pleased that our supporters enjoyed the virtual platform experience!”

The TS2020 Virtual Art Tour is now available for free viewing to the general public here:

The Committee invites the public, both local and international, to enjoy the offerings which indicate how important the visual arts are to the development and sustainability of the country going forward.

OCTOBER 2020 PRESS RELEASE

TRANSFORMING SPACES GOES VIRTUAL

Seven months ago the Transforming Spaces Committee was all excited and prepared to roll out their sold-out annual TS2020 event when the unexpected, invisible COVID-19 pandemic appeared, and closed down all activity indefinitely!

The Committee remained vigilant, however, closely monitoring the situation, and wishes to sincerely thank their loyal patrons for their understanding and patience during the long wait! Poised to move forward at the earliest opportunity, they are therefore very pleased to announce the new dates of Saturday and Sunday, November 14 & 15 for the premiere of the TS2020 virtual exhibition when all tickets purchased will be honoured!

As with all things COVID-related, the TS2020 format has pivoted in response to the pandemic’s demands. The strict health and safety protocols have mandated that group bus transportation would not be available this year, nor physical visits to the galleries which remain closed to the public. Instead, thanks to the wonders of technology, the entire exhibition tour will be presented virtually in a special TS2020 Premiere for ticket holders taking place over the TS weekend,!

In the comfort of their homes, ticketed patrons will be able to enjoy the high class exhibitions they have become accustomed to from the six participating galleries: The D’Aguilar Art Foundation (DAF), Doongalik Studios Art Gallery, The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB), The University of The Bahamas (UB), The Central Bank of The Bahamas, and the newest addition to the lineup: Project I.C.E., as well as dialogue with the galleries and artists afterwards. In addition, once restrictions permit, patrons will be able to collect their special TS2020 thank you gifts from the TS Committee.

TS2020 ticket holders are asked to contact the Committee at tsbahamas@gmail.com in order to ensure access to the virtual platform premiere event in November. Further details concerning the TS2020 virtual tour will be posted on the TS website www.tsbahamas.com and the social media pages @TSBahamas and on facebook.

For those unfamiliar with the TS experience, this year all roads lead once again to Atlantis, Paradise Island, a TS2020 sponsor, where guided bus tours will depart promptly at 9am. Project I.C.E. joins the Transforming Spaces 2020 Tour

A community space dedicated to S.T.E.A.M. development completed Phase 1 of restoration and renovation just in time for Transforming Spaces 2020. Only five months after breaking ground last August, Incubator for Collaborative Expression, also known as Project I.C.E., has become a beacon of change for many innovators, creative thinkers and S.T.E.A.M. advocates.

Conceived by master Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts, Project I.C.E. embodies his appreciation for conservation, creativity and community. Although famed for his transformative nature series, Sacred Spaces, this latest project expands his contribution to the revitalization of abandoned and historical sites like Clifton Heritage, Hillside House and The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB). Reflecting on a 40-year career as a cultural advocate and conservationist, Roberts recognizes Project I.C.E. as one of his lifetime achievements.

“Incubator for Collaborative Expression has been a long time in the making. For many years, I’ve dreamed of creating a shared space that would allow scientists, educators, researchers, artists, mathematicians and engineers to experience and benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration. A hub that symbolizes the perfect melting pot of local artistry, industry, ecology and community outreach, it also provides a sanctuary to our local cottage industries that sustain the livelihood of many,” said Roberts.

The D’Aguilar Art Foundation: Transforming Spaces 2020

For Transforming Spaces 2020, The D’Aguilar Art Foundation will present artwork from Abaco-based artists. The exhibition, entitled “A Burning for Home”, brings together Leanne Russell, Ivanna Gaitor, Attila Feszt, Androo Carey, Martysta Turnquest, Adrian Whylly and Yasmin Glinton, artists that were directly affected by Hurricane Dorian.

Yasmin Glinton is acting as the guest curator for The D’Aguilar Art Foundation gallery, a space that is normally curated by the in-house team of Saskia D’Aguilar and Tessa Whitehead. Glinton explained she wants to pull together various narratives to examine the multifaceted meaning of the word home, in particular how the connotation of that word has been impacted as a result of the hurricane.

Hurricane Dorian physically destroyed homes and displaced individuals on the Abacos as well as Grand Bahama. In Marsh Harbour alone, it is estimated that 75% of homes were destroyed. This destruction canvases an unravelling of individual lives through loss of home and belongings; family ties to land through the displacement of individuals from homes that existed as generational dwelling places; and community through the mass exodus of the individuals that kept communities thriving.
