TS2020 GOES VIRTUAL // NOV 14-15

As with all things COVID-related, TS2020 pivoted in response to the pandemic’s demands. Boasting sixteen years as the premier art festival in The Bahamas, Transforming Spaces (TS) returned in Fall 2020 to offer art enthusiasts, collectors, and visitors alike another unique experience totally immersed in the contemporary Bahamian art scene virtually.

Thanks to the wonders of technology, the entire exhibition tour was presented virtually in a special premiere for ticket holders on Saturday and Sunday, November 14 - 15th, 2020. In the comfort of their homes, ticketed patrons enjoyed the high class exhibitions they have become accustomed to, along with dialogue with the galleries and artists afterwards. Additionally, patrons were gifted with their special TS2020 memorabilia. We are pleased to invite you to view and enjoy the TS2020 Virtual Art Tour here on YouTube!

The D'Aguilar Art Foundation is delighted to announce our Transforming Spaces exhibition 'Anywhere But Here', which brings together rarely seen international artworks from our in-house collection. Although most of the over 2000 artworks in the DAF collection are by Bahamian artists, founding collectors, Vincent and Marina D'Aguilar also collected artworks from all over the world. During their many travels, they often explored local galleries and visited artist studios. As the global pandemic has forced us to isolate, halt travel plans, and postpone, well .... everything, the DAF will exhibit paintings and sculptures from Haiti, Jamaica, South America, China and Europe. We hope 'Anywhere But Here'  will provide some joy and inspiration.

In 2010 the Transforming Spaces committee welcomed University of The Bahamas (formerly The College of The Bahamas) to its gallery circuit. Ten years later the growth and opportunity afforded to both UB faculty, students, and alumni has been invaluable. In August 2020 UB established the Visual Arts and Design Department (VAD) and although during uncertain times VAD is dedicated to raising the university, faculty, and student profile through events like TS. As the department defines its vision to include the applied arts ad new media, for TS2020 it showcases UB’s first illustration exhibition entitled ‘Nah Listen’. Eight students enrolled in its Introduction To Illustration course collaborated to produce a collection of social justice posters offering messages of empathy and awareness.

Doongalik’s TS2020 theme: “Redesign, Re-create, Re-plaskit” is a response to the government’s ban on single use plastics that was launched on January 1, 2020. In true Bahamian vernacular (“plaskit” being Bahamian dialect for “plastic”), Doongalik felt it fitting to highlight “plaskit” in this creative way by extending an artists’ call to show positive environmental action using the 3R’s theme. Pam Burnside of Doongalik Studios states: “What I found striking with the entries, is that the majority of the artists paid homage to Mother Nature in the formation of their pieces which is very encouraging as they re-designed a material that is harmful to the environment to create art that depicts the beauty which that very material is harming!

By the year 2020, more visitors will come to The Bahamas because of our Bahamian Art, Culture, and Heritage, rather than merely for our sun, sand and sea.”
